A gardening project which began last spring at Johnston Elementary has continued into the winter. Kevin Butler, assistant principal, has worked with several 4th grade students in planting and harvesting the latest crop of vegetables. This past fall, Mr. Butler and his “all girl farm crew” planted turnips, mustard greens, collards, and cabbage. These “greens” are grown in raised beds built by STHS FFA/Ag students last spring. Students are responsible for the weeding, watering, and gathering of these leafy greens. They have shared their bounty with faculty and staff members.
When asked about the project Mr. Butler shared, “This garden has given the girls a chance to learn about growing their own food and working together as a team. While we work, we talk about gardening and life in general. My hope is that they will take some agriculture classes when they get to Thurmond.” Johnston Elementary continues to prepare their students for life in tomorrow’s world.

Four students and the assistant principal work in the school garden.
