First and fourth grade students at Johnston Elementary were treated last week to a visit from Andy Cohen and his Star Lab. Mr. Cohen presented lessons to each grade level that focused on the sun, moon, and stars based on the standards for each grade. Students were invited to enter the “lab chamber” and sit on the floor while Mr. Cohen talked and included them in “hands on” activities.

First graders learned about the movement of the Earth and the Moon in relation to the Sun. They compared the features of the day and night sky, learned about the phases of the moon, and discussed why we feel colder in the winter and warmer in the summer.

The fourth grade presentation focused on the changes of length of days and change of seasons, the Moon’s orbit and phases, and planetary orbits. Both grades were entertained as Mr. Cohen pointed out the various constellations “in the sky” and told stories of how each got its name. Amanda Mattson, 4th grade teacher and coordinator for the event, shared, “The Star Lab helps our students make a connection between class learning and our place in the solar system. The broad, abstract ideas are explained in terms they can understand. Mr. Cohen does an excellent job and our students always enjoy his presentation because of its interactive nature.”
