JES Honors Veterans

Local veterans were celebrated this past Monday, November 11, at Johnston Elementary during a school wide Veterans Day program. The honored guests and their students led the Veterans’ parade through the school into the gymnasium where other guests, students, and parents were assembled. The stage area was decorated with banners made by each grade level and represented the five branches of the armed services. The center banner titled “Wall of Honor” featured photos and biographical information of veterans who have family at JES.
The Strom Thurmond High School JROTC presented the colors prior to the Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of “The Star-Spangled Banner”. Led by the 5th grade classes, the program included a history of Veterans Day and musical selections performed by each grade level. Students in Dana Shields’ 4th grade GT class presented the White Table Ceremony, a tradition of setting a separate table in honor of our prisoners of war and missing military men and women which has been in place since the end of the Vietnam War.
The Strom Thurmond Concert Band concluded the program with the playing of “Taps” and an armed services medley. Veterans and their guests were then invited to a reception in the back of the gym.

4th grade students participating in the White Table Ceremony were Areli Guevara Vazquez, Paetyn Crouch, Allie Enlow, Charlotte O’Neal, Perla Gallegos Alvarez, and Kenya Lee.
