Johnston Elementary students have spent the month of February learning about historical figures who helped shape our nation. First grade students have been involved in studying the life of Mae Jemison, the first African American woman to be admitted into the astronaut training program and who later traveled in space aboard the Endeavour in 1992. Their studies continued with Garrett Morgan, an African American inventor, who is credited with multiple patents including the precursor to today’s traffic signal. Most recently, they learned that Jackie Robinson was the first African American to play major league baseball and played for the Brooklyn Dodgers.
Other grades levels are also studying prominent figures in our nation’s Black History. Kindergarten and Child Development students have completed units on Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks. Students in grades 2-5 are working on individual projects and reports about an historical figure of their choosing.
According to Kay Campbell, event coordinator, “All projects and reports will be available for viewing Thursday, February 27, during the school-wide Gallery Walk from 12:30-1:30. It will highlight and spotlight the students' learning. Chorus students will perform from 12:30-12:50 in the student atrium and an art gallery will be set up at the end of Artists Row. Families are friends are encouraged to attend.”
