Many Johnston Elementary students did not take off from school this summer. Instead, they spent their free time practicing the first three habits as they completed the Summer Reading Challenge. They were “Proactive”, they “Put First Things First”, and they “Began with the End in Mind” as they logged their minutes read and completed Choice Board activities based on their books.
Once school began, students turned in their logs and activities completed. They were rewarded for their diligence with a celebration at Tropical Snow. The readers were accompanied by Dana Kaltz, Literacy Coach, Angie Hood, and Kay Campbell on the walking field trip. The participants enjoyed a snow cone followed by fun activities in gym. To acknowledge their achievements, the entire student body celebrated these students with an indoor parade. Mrs. Kaltz who coordinated the challenge shared, “I’m so proud of our Summer Reader Leaders. To know they read more than 600 minutes and completed Choice Boards show their commitment to Habit 3, Putting First Things First.” Today’s readers become tomorrow’s leaders as well as future high school graduates.

A group of students hold a sign that says "Summer Readers are Leaders."
