Following a challenge issued to faculty and staff members, students were also tasked with choosing one word to become their “WORD GOAL” for the new year. A word goal is a word that helps a person focus on an area of their life which may need improvement so a person can grow or simply do more.
Students brainstormed several words before choosing which word would be their 2020 word goal. They were reminded to not choose a word that was already strength or a word their classmates may have chosen. Instead, they were to choose a word that would help them to become the best person they could be. They made a list of words then through the process of elimination chose their “WORD GOAL” for 2020.
The assignment did not end there. After their word was chosen, students had to list two reasons for choosing the word and at least three steps to take in order to meet the goal. The final step in the process was to create a visual display featuring their chosen word, the reasons it was selected, and their plan of action for implementation.
Tyra Miller, 5th grade teacher shared, “Having students complete this type activity reflects the tenets of Leader in Me. It prepares them so they can focus on the important attributes necessary for success in high school and future leadership roles.”
